Right, sorted!! ThumpUp

Before I went in for my appointment I asked the receptionist if my test results were back. "No, not yet" is what I got. "How odd, they went to the lab last friday and it's now tuesday evening." "Hmm yes they should be back I'll have another look. Oh, here they are in the 'links'. We have a direct link to the path lab to get results back quickly and yours are here!" Well that's quick then isn't it, 5 days later!!! "I can't give you the result though because the doctor hasn't seen it." Well blow me down with a feather, another surprise. "Well don't you worry about that because I'm about to go in and see him!"

Actually the doctor was totally fine, was very apologetic about how things had been handled and fully understood all my concerns about poor reception staff, a nurse who simply couldn't be bothered and the general tardiness of it all. He took down details and said he would look into it because it was unacceptable practice. He has been my GP for 20+years and has been at the centre of my life for most of that time, both with my own RA problems, and two pregnancies including a problematical one with the twins. I think he felt genuinely let down by his staff. I am confident he will deal with the issues I raised.

Yes, I do have an infection which is now being treated with appropriate antibiotics, so off the Enbrel once again! It's the second urine infection I've had in two months, very unusual for me, but he thinks it's possibly the kidneys not working properly due to the Mtx. So I'm glad to be off that for a while!

In future any suggestion of suspected infection of any sort I've to 'tell' the 'girls' to get a message directly to him and he will deal with it straight away. He was off last week but no-one had made him aware on his return that I'd even been in!

I feel it went well but time will tell. I'm feeling quite excited about my Cefalexin after the long wait! How sad is that? RollEyes Excitement over a bloody antibiotic ... now a box of chocolates I could understand!!

Next step, blood test Monday, results Tuesday with fingers crossed that the neutrophils have increased. Thank you all for your reassurances it's been fab to read your messages of support. What lovely people you all are ThumpUp

Hi Lyn,

Thank goodness you have got the antibiotics at last!
I hope he educates his staff now. You are ok but ,as I'm sure you are aware, it could have turned out a lot worse.
At our surgery high risk patients are highlighted on the computer so as soon as you give your name they are aware that you need to be seen by a doctor .
Enjoy the Cefalexin! I think you deserve a box of chocolates after what you've been through!

Love, Doreen xx

Great to hear you were given the antibiotics and that the Dr took your very justified complaints on board. I really hope that they antibiotics work quickly and that you feel well soon. Chocolates would help shame he didn't give you a presription for those.

I was so pleased to hear that your visit today had such a positive outcome, to have the doctor fully understand all you have been going through is priceless really, and helps you cope with the future.
Sending my best wishes, take care Julia x

Thank goodness to read this! It could all have been very different though if that infection got a hold before it was given the antibiotics. Lets hope that your GP is as good as his word and deals with the staff team appropriately. Please follow this up Lyn and ask your GP to put some kind of alert on your file paper and electronic for future problems.

No chance that you could get some info re RA from NRAS for the surgery as well? Unbelievable! As for the nurse - well!

Hope that the panic is well and truly over. Feel angry, you are entitled to. They let you down big style.

Sending healing , calming hugs your way! Enjoy some chocs too.

Hi Lyn,

I`m so pleased you`ve got the anti-biotics you need, and I hope the infection you have clears up quickly now.

Your GP sounds like he appreciates the problems you`ve had with his staff, so let`s hope he gives them the necessary kick up the behind, slap on the wrists etc.

My surgery`s like Doreen`s - there`s an "alert box" comes up on the computer against my name, so they know I need to be seen. It`s not for bad behaviour, honest!

Take care,

Kathleen x

Feeling so much better today, even after only three antibiotics; it never ceases to amaze me how quickly they kick in. At the moment a lot of it is relief after the concern of the last few days but I do feel more like my usual self. I have got myself a big box of chocolates and some cans of Orangina (thought I'd push the boat out!) and I'm going to pig out with my feet up.

Eleanor, I will get some info about NRAS for the surgery. I was thinking of doing that before any of this because there are 30 or so patients who may benefit. I will do it for sure now and get a few extra for staff!! I'll also ask about an 'alert system', it seems like a really good idea - I hate having to do battle with the receptionists! I will mention it next time I visit, he's probably heard enough of me for a little while at least!

Jean, no rush about emails, honestly! I'll get tomorrow out of the way, by which time I should be tons better, then we can discuss Tuesday meet up if you still plan to come this way.

Hi Lyn

I'm so glad you've got your problem sorted out, no thanks to the reception staff! Honestly, don't they get any training in these places? I think the staff at my health centre have been to charm school recently, they now greet you with a smile rather than a scowl, and seem more willing to help! I just hope it lasts.

It's good to hear you're feeling better, it must have been a worry for you.

Hello my friends Smile

An update! ThumpUp

After a scary ten days and a course of antibiotics the urine infection has finally gone, thankfully! I had my bloods repeated on Monday and today received the news that I am no longer neutropenic.

I restarted my Enbrel, yet again, today and have been told by the rheumy nurse that the consultant wants me to restart Methotrexate at 15mg, where I was before, immediately. Now this to me seems a bit on the fast side so me, being me and thinking I might just know my body better than they do, have decided that I will wait for a further week before re-introducing Mtx. This, I think, will give my body a better chance of recovery before being bombarded with more toxins. I actually feel a whole lot better without Mtx so am not too keen to be poppin' those pills again ... yet, at least!

Thank you all for your support.

Brilliant new Lyn - thank goodness. I think I would do the same as you re the methotrexate. I was wondering if the RA had been worse without the enbrel. Glad you are feeling better and your body is mending!

That's great news Lyn!ThumpUp

You do right to reintroduce one at a time, you know your body better than the docs do.

Thank goodness the infection and the neutropenia have gone.

That's great news Lyn and quick too. It does seem a bit soon to go back on to the drugs that caused it, I'm sure they will keep a close eye on you though. I had the same blood problem, it was the Sulfaz--- that caused it for me so I went on to Mxt then but tried to reintroduce it as part of triple drug therapy with Hydroxy later because I had done very well on just the Sulfa for the first 4 years until it caused the blood problem, when I went back on it my neura watsit took a dive again so I know now thaat I can't take the Sulfa again.
